Walking through the bustling Friday evening streets near Kyoto Station with Yume, Daiki, and Hana, trying to decide on a place to eat.

Daiki

It's Friday, so everywhere seems crowded. Shall we just go to the izakaya in front of the station?

Yume

We've gone there too much recently and got tired of it. Since Hana-chan is with us, let's do something else.

Aki

Then, how about the Italian place we went to the other day? The pasta was delicious there.

Hana, who is joining the group for the first time, speaks up hesitantly.

Hana

Ah, um, I think that place is closed on Fridays, if I remember correctly...

Daiki

Seriously? Then how about a hearty yakiniku? There's a really delicious place nearby.

Yume

Wait, Daiki-senpai, Hana-chan is wearing her favorite coat today, so yakiniku is out!

Aki

In that case, how about the Japanese bistro on the back street? It has a relaxed atmosphere and the food is delicious.

Hana

Wow, a Japanese bistro! That sounds wonderful. I'd love to go there.

Yume

Oh, that place! That's perfect. Aki, can you call them now and see if they have space?

Aki steps slightly away from the noisy street and dials the bistro on his phone.

Aki

Yeah, I'll call them. ...Ah, hello. I'd like to book a table for four starting at 19:00 today.

Yume nudges Aki's arm and whispers urgently while he's on the phone.

Yume

Aki, ask them if we can have the window table if it's open!

Aki

Ah, is it available? Great. If possible, could we have the window table? ...Yes, the reservation name is Aki Manu.

Aki hangs up and turns back to the waiting group.

Daiki

Oh, as expected of Aki, quick work! Alright, it's just about 19:00, let's head over right away.

The group slides open the wooden door. The bistro is cozy, warm, and already full. Aki approaches the counter where the master is prepping.

Master

Welcome. Do you have a reservation?

Aki

Yes, I am Aki Manu, who made a reservation for 19:00. I am sorry, we have become a little late.

Master

Manu-sama, yes. No, no, thank you for coming. Actually, if it had been more than 15 minutes, we were thinking of giving it to other customers.

Yume

Oh, that was close! Aki, it was a great success that we walked in a hurry.

Aki

Really. But Master, you still saved the window side table for us, didn't you? Thank you very much.

Master

Because you talked very happily on the phone, I remembered by your voice. Well then, please go to this window side table in the back.

They weave past the busy counter to the promised table by the window. Yume coordinates the seating.

Yume

Daiki-san, please take the end seat! Hana-chan, sit next to me. Aki, is the luggage basket at the feet okay?

Aki

Yeah, use the basket there. For the coats, it looks like it's okay to hang them on the hooks on this wall.

Master

I am sorry that it is narrow for your luggage and coats. Here is today's recommended menu. Please call us when you have decided.

At their table, everyone opens the menu. Daiki starts the drink order.

Daiki

Alright, shall we decide on drinks first? I'm having a draft beer, but what is everyone else drinking?

Yume

Yuzu sour for me! Hana-chan, oolong tea as usual? Aki, beer, right?

Hana

Ah, yes, I would like a warm oolong tea, please. Everyone, please go ahead first.

Aki

Then, two draft beers, one yuzu sour, and one warm oolong tea. Excuse me, can we order?

Master

Yes, coming. For drinks, that's two beers, a sour, and a warm oolong tea, right?

Daiki

The mackerel simmered in miso here is so flavorful and exquisite. You should get this too, Aki, because you definitely won't regret it.

Aki

Sounds good. If you go that far to recommend it, Daiki-san, I'll go with that too. What are you having, Yume?

Yume

I'm having the seasonal vegetable kakiage! It looks really delicious, so let's share it and eat.

Aki

That's nice. Master, two mackerel simmered in miso, one kakiage, and Hana-chan's order too, please.

Hana

I would like the ochazuke, please. May I have a little bit of everyone's side dishes as well?

Master

Certainly. One ochazuke, two mackerels simmered in miso, and one kakiage. I will bring them right away.

The glasses are empty, and the plates are clean. Yume smiles, looking out the window.

Yume

Anyway, I'm glad the Master recognized your voice. Thanks to that, we were able to take our time at this window seat.

Aki

Really. Well, it's about that time, so shall we get the bill? Excuse me, could we have the bill, please?

Master

Yes, the bill. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting at first today. That will be twelve thousand yen in total.

Aki

No, we are the ones who were late. I'll pay for everything here, so everyone can head outside first.

Yume

Eh, but we always split the bill. It's really not fair for Aki to pay even for Daiki-senpai and Hana-chan.

Aki

Hana-chan joined us for the first time today, so let me treat as a welcome. Let's split it next time.

Yume

I see, thank you! Then I'll gladly accept, and I'll let everyone know that from me.

Aki

Yeah, please do. Master, with this, please. Thank you for the meal, it was delicious.

Master

Thank you very much. Please be careful not to leave anything behind. We look forward to seeing you again!

They step out into the cool night air. After saying goodbye to the other two, Aki and Yume turn toward their station.

Aki

Well, we part ways with Daiki-senpai and the others at this corner. Shall we walk toward the station too?

Yume

Yeah, let's. Thank you so much for treating us today. See you, get home safely.
