Tonia and Yume walk into a bustling, bright pasta restaurant on the shopping street. A staff member approaches.

Staff

Welcome! How many people are you?

Yume

Three. One more is coming later. Um, is a window seat free?

Staff

Yes, we can prepare a window table seat for you right now. This way, please.

They are shown to a sunny table by the window. As they sit down, Saki runs up to the table, slightly out of breath.

Saki

Sorry, I'm a little late! Did you wait?

Yume

No, we just sat down. Saki, this is Tonia. This is my university friend, Saki.

Tonia

Nice to meet you, I'm Tonia. I'm happy to meet you today, Saki!

Saki

I'm happy to meet you too! Can I call you Tonia? Nice to meet you.

The staff member places three menus on the table.

Staff

Here are the menus. When you have decided, please call us with this call button.

The three of them open their menus at the window table.

Saki

There are so many pastas, I can't decide. Maybe I'll go with the 'Mushroom Cream'.

Yume

That looks delicious! I'm going for the classic 'Japanese-style Eggplant and Bacon Pasta'. Tonia, have you decided?

Tonia

Um, what is the 'tarako' in this 'Tarako Pasta'?

Yume

Ah, tarako is cod roe, the eggs of the codfish. It's a bit salty and goes really well with pasta.

Tonia

Fish eggs, I see! Sounds delicious. Okay, I'll have the 'Tarako Pasta'!

Saki

Oh, nice choice! Okay, I'll call the server. *Ding-dong*.

The waiter arrives at the table with a notepad.

Staff

I'm ready to take your order. Have you decided on your choices?

Tonia

Yes. One 'Tarako Pasta', please.

Yume

I'll have one 'Japanese-style Eggplant and Bacon Pasta', please.

Saki

And one 'Mushroom Cream' for me. Also, can we make them all drink sets?

Staff

Certainly. What drinks would you like for the sets?

Tonia

I'll have an iced tea, please.

Yume

Iced tea for me too.

Saki

I'll have a hot coffee after the meal, please. Oh, and we also want one of the Mont Blanc desserts!

Tonia

Ah, for that Mont Blanc, could we have three forks? We want to share it.

Staff

Certainly. We will bring the Mont Blanc and hot coffee after your meal. I will prepare forks for three people.

The table buzzes with chatter as the three friends catch up before the food arrives.

Saki

Tonia, you just came to Japan recently, right?

Tonia

Yeah, I just came last month. Every day is full of new things, so it's really fun.

Yume

Must be nice, I want to feel fresh every day too! Lately it's just classes and part-time work for me.

Saki

By the way, are you going on a trip to Kanazawa this weekend, Tonia?

Tonia

That's right! It's a two-day, one-night trip, but I'm still wondering where to stay.

Yume

Kanazawa is so nice! I wanted to go too, but I have a shift I really can't miss on Saturday...

The waiter arrives and places three steaming plates of pasta and the drinks on the table.

Saki

Ah, the pasta is here! Looks delicious! My mushroom cream smells amazing.

Tonia

My tarako pasta looks delicious too. Well, let's eat!

Yume

Let's eat! Yeah, this eggplant and bacon has a strong flavor and is delicious!

They take a few bites of their pasta, enjoying the food, before returning to the Kanazawa talk.

Saki

Hey, if you're going to Kanazawa, you absolutely must eat a seafood bowl at Omicho Market! It's really delicious.

Tonia

A seafood bowl sounds great! Looks delicious. I want to eat sushi too.

Yume

So jealous, fresh seafood. Eat lots of it for me too, okay?

After they finish their pasta, the staff clears the table and brings the dessert and coffee.

Saki

Ah, the Mont Blanc has arrived. And there are indeed three forks!

Tonia

It has chestnut cream on top and looks delicious. Let's share it.

Yume

Yay! Well, I'll take a bite. ...Mmm, sweet and perfect!

The plates and dessert are cleared. Yume looks at her phone screen.

Yume

It's about that time. It looks like we do the payment at the register machine.

Tonia

Ah, you're right. Well, let's ask for the bill.

They stand up and walk to the front register machine, slip in hand.

Staff

I'll take the slip. Is the payment all together?

Saki

Is separate okay? ...Ah, maybe splitting it evenly is faster?

Tonia

That's true. How much is it in total? Let's split it evenly.

Staff

The total comes to 4,500 yen. That is 1,500 yen per person.

Yume

Exactly 1,500 yen each. Well, let's each put it into this machine!

They put their cash into the machine and step outside the restaurant.

Staff

Thank you very much! Please come again.

Tonia

Thank you for the meal. I really had a great time today!

Saki

I had fun too! Have a great Kanazawa trip. Send me photos, okay!

Yume

I'm so satisfied we got to eat delicious pasta too! Well then, see you later!
