こちらは南口ですが、ひかりホテルは北口のほうが近いですよ。北口を出て、まっすぐ二つ目の角を左に曲がってください。
This is the south exit, but the north exit is closer for Hikari Hotel. Go out the north exit, go straight, turn left at the second corner.

お箸ですか？錦市場のほうに「はし」というお店がありますよ。ここから北に歩いて十分くらいです。

贈り物ですね。こちらは竹で、軽くて使いやすいです。千二百円。こちらは檜で、香りがよくて長持ちします。三千円。そしてこちらは…職人の手作り。漆塗りで、一生使えます。八千円。
A gift, I see. These are bamboo — light and easy to use. 1,200 yen. These are cypress — lovely fragrance, they last. 3,000 yen. And these... handmade by a craftsman. Lacquered — last a lifetime. 8,000 yen.
You notice a very plain looking pair of bamboo chopsticks, just sticks really, priced at 12,000 yen. They’re darker than the others, with an unusual colour.
あの…これは…どうしてこんなに高いんですか？
Um... this... why is it a bit expensive?
お目が高い。これは煤竹と言いまして、古い民家の屋根裏で何十年も囲炉裏の煙で燻された竹です。見た目はシンプルですけど、とても貴重なんですよ。
You have a good eye. This is susudake — bamboo smoked for decades by the hearth in the rafters of old farmhouses. It looks simple, but it’s very precious.
そうですか…あの、すすたけにします！妻への贈り物です。

Sushi! For a proper sushi place, I’d recommend Nishiki Market. Two streets up, turn left. Popular with locals. Kyoto’s far from the sea, but fresh toppings arrive every morning.
The waiter brings you a massive laminated English menu. It's so big there's hardly space for the sushi.
